The story at once drops the reader in the middle of the upper echelon at a war college for dragon riders.
Violet Sorrengail is a twenty-year-old girl who is supposed to go to the Scribe Quadrant but is sent to the Riders Quadrant against her will by her brutal mother. She is a weak woman who must fight for her survival and try to tame a dragon.
While receiving their education at Basgiath War College, Violet has lethal fights with other cadets and the brilliant but cruel leader, Xaden Riorson. Every day is a struggle for life with little interest in bonding, and many cadets consider her an intrusion. The suspense remains high as Violet continuously attempts to outsmart her adversaries and survive.
Amidst the rising danger from an outer war and eroding kingdom subsidiaries, Violet discovers treason by the leadership. As loyalties change and dangerous battles occur, everything hangs in the balance. The novel combines elements of the Gothic novel, such as suspense, adventure, and passion, and keeps the readers interested till the last page.
