Modern Analytical Chemistry – David Harvey: As currently taught, introductory course in analytical chemistry emphasizes quantitative (and sometimes qualitative) methods of study including an important dose of equilibrium chemistry.
Analytical chemistry, however, is quite equilibrium chemistry and a set of analytical methods; it’s an approach to solving chemical problems. Although discussing different methods is vital , that discussion should not come at the expense of important topics. The introductory analytical course is that the ideal place within the chemistry curriculum to explore topics like experimental design, sampling, calibration strategies, standardization, optimization, statistics, and therefore the validation of experimental results.
These topics are helpful in developing the best experimental protocols, and in interpreting experimental outcomes. If chemistry is actually an experimental science, then it’s essential that all chemistry learners understand how these courses similar to the experiments they perform in other chemistry courses.
In preparing this textbook, I even have tried to seek out a more appropriate balance between theory and practice, between “classical” and “modern” methods and between analytical methods and data analysis. Clearly, the quantity of fabric during this textbook exceeds what are often covered during a single semester; it’s my hope, however, that the range of topics will meet the requirements of various instructors, while, perhaps,
suggesting some new topics to hide .
Students majoring in other science disciplines (biology, biochemistry, environmental science, engineering, and geology, to call a few), curious about obtaining a stronger background in qualitative analysis . it’s particularly appropriate for chemistry majors who aren’t getting to attend grad school , and who often do not enroll in those advanced courses in Modern Analytical Chemistry – David Harvey that need physical chemistry as a per-requisite.
Competence in algebra is essential; calculus is employed once in a while , however, its presence isn’t essential to the material’s treatment.
