Amid a leave period of on leave from the British Security Service, Laura March is murdered on the spot in Switzerland by a poisonous pellet fired from an air rifle with considerable power. James Bond and Swiss agent Fredericka “Flicka” von Grusse are immediately contacted to investigate.


When attending Laura’s funeral, Bond notices among the wreaths a beautiful white rose with its petals stained blood-red and a vague note attached to the stem. Bond’s investigation uncovers a similar message and rose at funerals of four prominent individuals, who were all killed within just a week.

There is no one to claim any responsibility for the deaths; Bond is focused on Laura’s case. He discovers that she has recently ended her relationship with world-renowned actor David Dragonpol, now an eccentric collector of theatre souvenirs who lives in a castle on the Rhine. Then Bond and Flicka investigate undercover for clues in the court, and then in the garden, they discover roses that resemble those at each of the funerals.

John Gardner was an American writer and critic of literature. He wrote several short stories and novels as a teacher of creativity, English, and Anglo-Saxon at various universities across all over the United States. The two novels he wrote [The Art of Fiction and The Art of Fiction and How to Become A Novelistare considered classics of the area. Most well-known is his book Grendel that was released in 1971.

Gardner was a frequent attendee at Bread Loaf’s Writers’ Convention. Two of Gardner’s most recurring themes are the redemptive power of art as expressed through Grendel in the powerful impact of the shaper in Grendel’s philosophical struggle and his belief that fiction is moral as exemplified by Grendel’s quest to find the meaning.
